Gardening Equipment

No special gardening equipment is required for small vegetables and flower gardens. It’s a waste of time and money to buy all sorts of supplies that you hardly get to use. The traditional gardening equipment includes rakes, shovels, spades, hole diggers and a few others. Yet, the diversity of the tools is much larger for more extensive gardening applications. The use of automated technology and power supplies has led to the introduction of all sorts of tools and accessories.

home gardening equipment

Thus, we can mention cooling and misting systems, lawn mowers, garden carts, cordless electric tools, excavators, casters and pressure washers. They are available in different categories produced by numerous manufacturers and sold at more or less affordable prices. When shopping for gardening equipment, many gardeners have to meet a budget and the purchases they make correspond to long term or immediate needs. Local retailers and online suppliers can provide a high variety of products that you can choose or order from catalogs.

gardening equipments

It is important to shop not by brand name but by product category when you need a certain gardening equipment. Once again the selection bears the influence of the context. Gardening equipment should remain practical and simple, if you go for too fanciful stuff, you risk paying too much money. Moreover, the investment in gardening equipment is progressive as you should buy materials only when you really need them. Professional gardeners will always have more tools than hobbyists, but they often depend on gardening to make a living.

Landscaping requires a different kind of gardening equipment. From furniture to hammocks, gazebos, rockers and porch swings, there is everything out there for a gardening enthusiast. Chimes, balls and water statues could also enhance the atmosphere of the garden, but they are pretty costly. The large availability of decorative styles in accessories correspond to the modern trend of making the garden as inviting and as appealing as possible.

gardening equipment

Thus from landscaping to occupational gardening, equipment varies greatly. It is up to the user to carefully choose the items that are most suitable for the regular gardening tasks. Moreover, costs have to remain low so that quality could stay high. Consequently, we can only wish you ‘Happy Shopping’, hoping you’ll find what you need to improve your gardening experience.

Growing Herb from Seeds

I remember that back in the day folks did all their gardening by ordering their seeds from a catalog. It seemed like her whole garden was from that catalog. Those days are long gone now. I don’t have the time to wait the month or more for germination. Do you?

Some herbs are better than others for starting from seeds. One herb that will quickly grow and rapidly mature is dill. It can grow pretty much anywhere. If you want to raise other herb plants (like thyme) from seeds plan to wait a very long time for sprouting. Annuals are easily grown from seeds, as are some perennials. Since perennials keep coming back every year, they are real values for your budget.

I prefer not to start my perennial plants in a seed tray or in a regular herb garden bed; instead, I use a container. The pot will give the plant lots of room to grow and protect it from invasive weeds while they slowly grow. Most herb plants can begin to sprout within three or 4 weeks.

Depending on the climate where you live, you may be able to plant both your annual herb plants and perennial herbs at the same time, any time of the year. If you live in a colder climate, sow your annuals in the spring, summer or fall—all will work.

If you’re going to raise from seeds, you cannot miss with these:

Anise: This wonderful iridescent herb is known by some people as the hyssop and is a source of flavoring for licorice—not to mention the smell. Its purple, blue and green notched leaves go well with its purple and blue flowers. It is mostly used in teas, potpourris and as a garnish for dishes. It’s best to begin your perennial anise early, up to 8 weeks before you plan to move it outside

Caraway: The interesting looking caraway herb, which has a nutty, licorice taste that is just as interesting, is used in liqueurs, but also in sauerkraut, split pea soup and even goulash. Although you can eat the root, the most often used part of the herb is its seed. To have a longer growing season with this biennial, start your herb indoors from seeds at least 6 weeks before you intend to move it outside.

Coneflower: This easy-care perennial will be a fabulous addition to your herb garden. Although many people call it a wildflower, it’s an herb because of its healing benefits. This perennial herb, also known as Echinacea, is good for boosting the immune system and helping keep allergies at bay.

It can take about six weeks for your herb plants to sprout, get strong and be ready to go outdoors in either pots or beds. This is especially helpful if you live in cold-weather climates—it will give you a jumpstart on the growing season.

If you are in a warm-weather zone, you can start your perennials at anytime.

Sowing seeds for your annuals is pretty uncomplicated. Just break up the ground a little and sprinkle the seeds on that place and cover lightly with dirt. If you select your herbs wisely, you can get all self-sowers, which can come back next season from the seeds they “sow” this season.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Growing Herbs: Pots

It is easy to cultivate one herb plant in one pot. You can stretch your imagination and try multiple herbs in the same pot. It looks prettier and adds a little texture to my herb garden.

If you want to try this, you would pick herbs that have similar soil and watering needs and then pick up those that will look good together or have similar uses—like putting all your cooking herbs together.

Try these herb plants that will grow well in your pots:

Sage: There are so many varieties of sage that you could plant only sage in your garden and still have a lot of colors, textures and sizes. Sage grows well from seeds, which can give you a head start on the growing season if you start early inside. Grow your sage in nice, large pot that has nice drainage and place it where it can get lots of sunshine. If you are growing sage for the leaves, you will want to cut off any buds that appear on the plant, which will force the herb to concentrate on growing more foliage rather than flowers.

Scented geraniums: Just like sage, there are a lot of kinds of scented geraniums to choose from. I hope you enjoy scented geraniums as much as I do. Although they look very similar to floral (non-herbal) variety, these also grow well in containers that you can get at any nursery, home improvement or discount store. They can take full sun and well-drained soil. You can harvest the stems and leaves for cakes and teas. You can even harvest the blooms for use in floral pressings.

Cardamom: Cardamom is a great plant for you if bad breath is an issue for you. This is one of the larger herb plants you can plant in a pot; just remember that you will need to bring it in for the winter. You can harvest the seeds to add a little flavor of India to your rice and chicken meals, soups and stews. There are many other ways to use for cardamom, such as easing problems with flatulence (if you have them).

Lemon verbena: There are so many wonderful ways to use lemon verbena that I would call it indispensable in my herb garden. Do not even think about beginning with seeds. Go out and get a young plant and get it started in a wide pot that will support the herb’s height. Lemon verbena can take the full sun and does well if the sod has good drainage. Check out your foliage for signs of drought because the foliage is the usable part of the herb.

Some other herb plants that I’d recommend for you to start with in your container combinations are: thyme, mints, lavender, goldenrod, fennel and carrot.

Good luck with your plant gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Who Can Start A Garden

Before you begin growing a garden, you’ll need to learn more about the growing zone you live in. A good place to start is the National Gardening Association’s website (www.garden.org/zipzone), which will let you know which USDA hardiness zone you live in, as well as what plants are best suited for your particular climate. In the bottom left-hand corner, you’ll see an area for “Local Guides,” where you can choose your state and your city to learn more about edible food and flowers you can grow, about caring for your garden and cooking from your garden. These gardening tips can help you begin thinking about what types of flowers you’d like to grow.

Those with little gardening experience will often opt to transplant annuals that have already been grown at a nursery. This is a quick-fix garden for the front yard if you’re hurrying to catch up with the neighbors. You may also try container gardening from seed as an experiment. Once the containers fill with blooms, you can bring them out to the front yard. Some people garden rather extensively with containers and place them all next to one another, so you see a full garden, rather than the individual pots. Petunias, marigolds, begonias, geraniums, impatiens, pansies, petunias and salvia are popular varieties. A good place to start is at www.backyardgardener.com/annual/index.html, where you can learn which annuals will endure in cold weather, endure in heat, grow in poor soil, have a short bloom season, can be sown in the fall and are best for your soil type.

Some people enjoy growing a garden that will magically come back each year, without replanting. This is called a perennial garden. You can gather more information and perennial flower gardening tips at www.backyardgardener.com/pren/index.html. You’ll learn about perennials for backgrounds, for edging, for hardy environments, for long blooming seasons, for old-fashioned gardens and for semi-shade gardens. Some popular perennials include peonies, bleeding hearts, columbine, daffodils, crocuses, irises, asters, chrysanthemums, daisies, violets and black eyed Susan. You’ll need to pay special attention to color, height and bloom period are all equally important when dealing with perennials.

A gardening expert will tell you that soil preparation is the most important part of growing a garden successfully. Without the proper nutrients, aeration and soil composition, your flowers will surely flop. Each flower has different soil requirements, whether it is acidic or alkaline, so it’s best to test your soil before you begin so you know what you’re dealing with. For instance, marigolds, verbenas and calliopsis will tolerate acidic soils, whereas impatiens, zinnias, nasturtiums and candytufts prefer a more neutral, alkaline soil. To ensure that your soil drains well, you will need to assess whether your soil is composed of clay, sand or loam. You’ll need to add a mixture of compost and manure to your soil, working it down about 4 inches to create a healthy ecosystem for your plants and their beneficial microorganism pals.

Should you have the need of remodeling your shower cubicles and add-ons, call Daulton Rice and he will do his magic to give you the shower of your dreams! A great creation that only he can make. A cozy hot tub for you! Do not hesitate and call on him today.
