Building Greenhouse Plans
So you’ve decided to build yourself a greenhouse! Good for you! Trust me, you’re starting on the path toward making positive changes in your diet and in your home. Congrats on moving past the ‘thinking about it’ stage and entering the ‘do it’ stage!
What next? You’re going to need some information on the basics so you can create a decent plan for the project. One of the major decisions you’ll make is what to use for the frame, and the covering that goes over the framework. Your choice of these materials will impact the output you expect from your greenhouse.
Ask yourself: How big should the greenhouse be? Will it be permanent or temporary? Will you use it year round or just for a few months? How much money (wince!) can you budget for the frame and glazing material? Will the project be do-it-yourself, in which case you might want easy-to-work-with and lightweight materials?
Have you already taken some time to think about the possible choices you have for framework? Your goal is to be well-informed. Treated wood, iron, aluminum, composites, and PVC each has advantages and disadvantages. Choose based on budget, sturdiness, durability, ease of handling and maintenance; and what kind of glazing you prefer.
For glazing your choices depend on the framing you choose. For example, with PVC you don’t want to use a heavy material like glass. Regardless of choice, think about glazing that is durable, low-maintenance, allows for good light yet low heat loss, is UV stabilized, distributes light evenly, suits your budget and is treated to prevent dripping.
If you’re budget is limited, but your ambition is high – remember that you don’t have to build with fancy materials. You can get by with a lot of the scrap you probably store in your garage!
