I'd suggest wearing a dust mask while working with DE. I'm not sure what it says on the product label, but it never hurts to check before using anything even when it's organic in nature.

if it dehydrates the bugs, won't it dehydrate the plants (or your animal if you use it on him?) can it be applied to the soil instead? i heard something about copper tape as a deterrent to snails and slugs but haven't had a chance to try it out myself.

It only works on animals with Exo-Skeletons. Be sure to use a mask though, to protect your lungs from the dust.

Use egg shells for slugs.

Have you tried Neem oil? It shouldn't bother the beneficials, such as ladybugs and pollinators, as long as you spray at dusk. It tends to make the plant unpleasant/repellant to chewing and sucking insects, and also controls some fungals, black spot, powdery mildew, anthracnose and rust. Google around. I spray my transplants before setting out so they don't get chewed up before they thrive, and use it sparingly when I have more damage than the plants can sustain. Try 'Surround' for your apples.
