Home lighting requires careful planning as it is responsible for the whole look and feel of an area apart from functional needs. There is a wide range of home lighting fixtures available now a days. Here we will be discussing about the most common portable fixtures used in homes- lamps and lamp shades.

First comes the accent lamps. They can be used in bedrooms, bathrooms, foyer. Area etc Basically they can be used anywhere you need some extra lighting. Since they are under 20 inches in height, they are best for this purpose.

Table lamps are one of the most versatile lighting fixtures. They can be used almost every where you wish to like, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms etc. They are used for general illumination purpose.

Another type of lamps are the desk lamps. They are around 12 to 20 inches high and are used in areas where some specific tasks are performed. For lighting up the dark corners, floor lamps are the best. Wall lamps are a popular choice for bedrooms. They are mainly used where table space is limited.

Lamps are a vital part of home decorating accessories. They add a kind of style element to the area. There are many different styles of lamps available in the market today with different shapes, colors and sizes. Some popular one’s are : neutral tans, off-whites, antique whites, iron and polished brass.

There are three-way switch lamps also available and they look good in home. But, for those keep one thing in mind, always go for a three-way bulb to get the desired illumination effect.

In general, the height of the shade should be equal the measurement taken from the base of the lamp to the bottom of the bulb socket. However, some newer styles of lamps and accent lamps do not always follow this rule. The lamp shade should be at least as wide as the widest point of the lamp body.

Shade sizes are expressed in 3 dimensions. The first represents the top diameter, the second represents the bottom diameter, and the third represents the shade’s height. Shades can be made of almost any material, but the most common are silk, cotton, linen, plastic/vinyl and paper.
