Ants and Ant Colonies
Ants are a social insect related to wasps. They live together in colonies, which can sometimes be very large. Ants divide responsibilities among different jobs in a social hierarchy. Ants can be found in just about every type of climate, and they are a common insect pest. If you have an ant problem there are several ways to tackle it.
Ants are social insects, which means that they live together in large groups, dividing labor according to different jobs. The queen lives deep inside the colony laying eggs. Workers gather food for the other ants to eat, build and repair the nest, and tend to the ant larvae. Soldiers guard the nest from predators, attacking other insects and sometimes even larger animals. Ant colonies can become very large, with some colonies containing millions of ants. Most ant nests are smaller, however.
There are many different types of ants, and some are considered pests. The most common of these in the US are fire ants, carpenter ants, and pavement ants. Fire ants are a serious problem in parts of the Southern US. They have a painful bite and build large mounds that can be difficult to get rid of.
Carpenter ants are larger ants which feed on wood. If they get into your house, they can cause damage to the wood beams. Pavement ants get their name from the fact that they often nest around pavement. These ants often invade homes, looking for food and other sweet things.
Ants live in large groups, with different ants having different responsibilities. Some ants gather food, some build the nest, and some guard it. Ants are good insects most of the time, but they can become pests when they enter placed they shouldn’t be. Ant bites and other types of damage are some of the problems they cause.
