Help in Choosing Outdoor Furniture Covers For Your Family

by Brad Jensen

Outdoor furniture covers are a really good idea if you want to safeguard your investment in patio furniture. Whether you live in the northern climes and need to protect you furniture from the salt and snow or in a tropical country and need to protect your patio furniture from a blazing sun, a small investment in outdoor furniture covers is well worth it.

The types of outdoor furniture that generally need to be covered are any type of painted furniture and specific types of unpainted furniture made out of hard wood or soft wood. Even expensive cedar furniture which fades to a silvery color can benefit from a bit protection from the elements, such as salt and snow. Without some good protection both of these types of furniture can age and deteriorate rapidly. Outdoor furniture covers are as varied as patio furniture is itself.

Before you start shopping for outdoor furniture covers, you should decide how often you will use the covers. In some areas, depending on the elements, it might be necessary to use the covers every second day, in other areas you might only use the covers once every few weeks perhaps when there is an extended period when the furniture will not be used. However, it isn’t always necessary to use the covers every day, every week or even every month. In other locales, you might use outdoor furniture covers once per year in winter preparation.

If you live in a southern country, you are likely to have wooden patio furniture. As you are aware, a punishing tropical sun can strip a layer of finish off your chair in less than 10 months. In these hotter areas, I recommend covering up your patio tables and chairs any time that you think you might not use them for more than 2 days. You will also find it very helpful to the lifespan of your patio furniture if you pulled the furniture into a shaded are in your absence.

If you live in northern Europe, or Canada or the northern US, then you do not need to worry about the sun’s harmful UV rays. In these northern locales, the furniture need only be seriously protected during the harsh winter months. The particular types of covers needed for harsh winter protection need to be very durable so they can withstand snow and/or freezing rain.

Certain fabrics are simply more durable than others and you should consider that when choosing to buy something. Plasticized tarpaulins are likely the most durable materials I know. Everybody seems to have grown up with a 20 year old tarp in their shed or garage. Although they are not very attractive, these tarps might be suitable for covering up your patio furniture during the winter months. Soon enough they will be covered in snow in any event.

There are various aspects to consider when choosing the perfect outdoor furniture covers. If you carefully think about the purpose of the covers then you will be better able to choose the covers best for your outside furniture.
