Reasons for Becoming a Gardener

by Matt Truman

There are numerous reasons to consider starting your own garden. There are a diverse array of benefits from growing a variety of fruits and plants. You may be surprised to find out just how beneficial gardening is to your happiness and health.

Since most people grow food, the most obvious yield is the food itself. Gardening is a great way to get free food, besides the cost of soil and fertilizer. Also, the food you get is usually much better than what you would buy at the store.

Most people choose to have organic gardens, and even those who don’t choose usually do so without knowing it. For a garden to be organic, it simply must not use any synthetically made chemicals. Organic food is inherently much better for you than pesticide-ridden stuff.

Depending on the size of your garden, tending it can be physically challenging. There is the hoeing, the planting, the watering, and the harvesting. Small gardens usually do not require much activity, but you can really work up a sweat if you are managing a large field.

In addition to being physically challenging, gardening can also be good for the mental state. It relieves stress and requires one to use their mind to figure out the best ways to efficiently tend their garden. After a long period of gardening, it would be no surprise if you found yourself a bit smarter.

Maintaining your own garden is an extremely efficient way to reduce stress consistently throughout your life. Since stress is a significant contributor to serious conditions including heart disease and cancer, this fact is quite important. Of course, the organic food you get also strengthens your body too.

In the case that you have a very large yield from your garden, you can even make some money for your efforts. Certain dedicated fruit and vegetable shops will buy products from trusted producers, and you could also sell to your friends, which would be quicker and easier.

As you can see, the benefits from gardening are numerous, and these are only some of the things you will gain from participating in this great activity. You will also feel self-fulfilled, satisfied, and overall happier from interacting with nature in such a direct way.
