Selecting Lighting Fixtures For Home
A good lighting design is very important for your home. Before selecting any lighting fixtures, you should be very clear with the type of lighting you want in your home. Whether you need lighting that sets the mood of the place or lighting for performing specific tasks?
Task lighting is needed for areas where tasks like reading, writing, etc. is done, where you need direct and focused light to perform specific tasks. A desk lamp is the most common example of task lighting.
Since task lights are used for completing specific task, they are generally used continuously for a short time period as once the job is done, you no longer need it. Overhead reading lamps and picture lights are some other examples of task lighting.
Mood lighting is often referred to as Accent Lighting. Mood lighting can come in many forms, but the main purpose of mood lighting is to create a feeling in a room. A mood can be created by the level of light in the room (bright or dark) or by the placement of light, which can create appealing puddles of light, highlighting selected areas. Mood lighting can also add drama to a room.
Mood lighting can come from accent lamps, desk lamps or from floor lamps. The purpose of accent lamps is not to light the whole room but to add a highlight to an area. Accent lamps that are placed on side tables, on a bookcase or on top of an entertainment center can give off a pleasant, soft glow.
Floor lamps can create a more inviting environment as their light is not spread over a large area so are just used for lighting a small space. Having a floor lamp next to a reading chair can make you feel even more relaxed.
Mood lighting is also important for a room that is designated as a TV or movie room. The soft light provided by accent lighting placed behind or close to the television can help to reduce eye-strain by reducing the amount of dramatic light changes without losing the mood of the event.
Generally, rooms are used for many activities. So you might have to install more than one type of lighting fixture in a room. For example a room can be used for both, doing homework and watching TV. So, you can use a desk lamp and soft accent light on a sofa table for the purpose.
