Use Outdoor Party Lights To Romanticize Your Backyard

by Jane A Moore

Nothing spices up a party like some well positioned outdoor party lights. Whether subtle or bold, twinkly or dim these outdoor lights can make a big statement and really add a celebratory feel to any outdoor party. In addition, some outdoor lighting is important for safety reasons.

If you are planning to outfit your backyard with outdoor party lights, you don’t need to spend a lot. Think outside the box and you can often find many other types of lighting that cheaply and effectively create the look you are after. For example, Christmas lights in the right color scheme are easy to find and can often be obtained after Christmas very inexpensively. For special occasions, bringing indoor lighting outside can also be effective, but this is weather dependent and should not be permanent.

There are so many options available when you are planning your outdoor party. You may want to decorate your backyard with permanent lighting which will be available for any impromptu occasion; or you could choose to go all out and find special lighting options which will complete a special one- time party theme. Regardless of the permanency of the lighting, you should try to keep the entire outdoor space you are lighting in mind – a cohesive plan will often be a lot more effective than an impulse buy decorating approach.

If you are planning your outdoor party lights for a special occasion, consider the guests you will have at your party. Will this be a family event with seniors and children; if so then more lighting will be required to ensure the safety of those with poor night vision, and to reassure children who may be afraid of the dark. You will also want to make sure to address specific areas where more light is required, such as food and drink areas, or live entertainment.

Intimate dinner parties can be further romanticized by dim lights or candle light. Often lights in the distance, for example rope lights twirled around the base of a tree, can add a special touch. Christmas lights, if monochromatic, can be the perfect lighting for outdoor parties. There are also special outdoor lights in the shapes of large balls or stars. These would be perfect if hung from a tree.

If you have a water feature to play with, this can add an entirely different dimension to the types of party lights you are able to feature. Whether you are at a cottage on the lake or the ocean, or you have a backyard pool, or even just a small water fountain, spotlights and underwater lighting can create wonderful lighting effects and will add a sense of spaciousness to the event. However you choose to light the water feature you have available, make sure to find lighting specifically designed to be in contact with water, and keep all extension cords and receptacles well out of range of water and wet areas.

Plan your lighting scheme in advance. Look in magazines or online for ideas. Visit lighting stores or the lighting departments of large stores like Home Depot or Ikea. Any party you decide to host can be enhanced by the use of outdoor party lights.
