You Can Grow Vegetables Anywhere!

by Joan Williams

Ask anyone with a garden in their yard how good vegetables taste when they have been out of the ground for only a few minutes when you eat them. Ask anyone how much fun it is to get down on your knees, in the dirt, and feeling the earth between your fingers. Most will say it is not only therapeutic, but a very relaxing way to spend a few hours.

Can anyone grow vegetables? Sure you can. The basic rules are the same, sunshine and water. But each living situation presents challenges unique to that locale. You can have a garden if you live in an apartment. It just presents different challenges than a huge backyard. If you live in the north, even though it is cold half of the year, you can still have a garden. You could even make money at your local farmer’s market using the land on your hobby farm.

Apartment dwellers need to look at their balconies, and then from there, find out what is the best way to set up your garden. There are special growing containers you can purchase, or even make from containers you have around the house. A simple internet search can help you get everything set up. Just remember that you will be somewhat limited with what you can grow, as you won’t be able to set up what is needed for root vegetables.

People who live further up north do have the ability to grow outside, but they can also take advantage of greenhouses. Just don’t put greenhouses in the “northern climate only” category. Some areas get so hot, that the heat actually stops vegetables growing. Greenhouses can also be used to keep the temperature cool enough for vegetables to grow. Greenhouses are great to keep temperatures stable. That is the best way to describe them. Just remember, no matter what you decide to grow in your greenhouse, make sure you get the seeds that are made specifically for greenhouse growing.

Hobby farming is not only a way to get out of the city, but also can offer you an additional source of income. With a couple of acres and simple farm equipment you can grow a wide variety of crops. You won’t produce so much that you would need to look for a broker to sell them to grocery stores, but you will be able to produce enough for your family with plenty left over to sell at the local farmer’s market. An advantage of selling at a farmer’s market, you will get all the profit. If you are selling through a broker, you may be selling more, but you will get much less of the profit.

Gardening in a more traditional sense is very simple. Water and sun are the two most important factors. As long as there is an area of your property that is in the sunlight for more than 6 hours a day, you can have a garden. Setting up a garden is fairly easy if you follow the basics. You need to find the right soil, fertilizer and deciding what you want to grow. Some vegetables require special items, like stakes. Once you know what you are going to grow, a little research can go a long way in making your garden successful.

Find your local gardening club and see what advice you can get from them. Call the nurseries and see what advice they can give you. Don’t be surprised if the list of what you can grow is longer than you thought.
